Walk-in Fingerprinting Services in Baltimore City
In 1997, the Department of Justice established the automated background check to increase the speed at which applicants are processed. With more and more companies now requiring background checks, it is more important than ever to streamline the process and prevent the huge backlog of paperwork that previously accompanied each request.

By digitizing an applicant’s fingerprints and comparing them with existing information in an electronic library, all agencies have speedy access to the same information and are able to make decisions immediately without the long delays that formerly cost those same companies valuable time and resources. A technician can now take fingerprints within five or ten minutes without needing ink or any other paraphernalia; then the machine electronically checks the fingerprint detail (minutiae) and determines readability while the applicant is still on-site, thus practically eliminating the possibility of a return visit if the prints are not clear. With the prints now digitized, they can be transmitted directly to the Department of Justice electronically. The prints can then be automatically directed to the appropriate agency for processing. This procedure, which used to take days, now can be done in a matter of hours:

  • Prints submitted electronically to the state of Maryland take about 72 hours to complete
  • Prints submitted on standard fingerprint cards in comparison, take 10-12 days to complete
  • Processing times for electronically submitted FBI record prints—30 days
  • Processing times for FBI-submitted physical fingerprint cards—60 days

Now that security is such a sensitive issue and companies want to reduce their liability by verifying the identity and integrity of their applicants. This process used to be expensive and time-consuming, particularly in those fields where background checks are mandatory; like government and government-service industries, real estate licensees, elder and child caregivers and healthcare professionals, teachers, financial industry professionals, to name a few. The new system is more cost-effective for  these larger industries, and it is now possible for everyone, even smaller companies, to perform timely background checks on their applicants as well—resulting in a better pool of integrity-tested applicants for any position.

There is a clear advantage to Livescan prints; however, though the technology is available, certain agencies may not have the ability to receive digitized prints—or they may simply prefer to have a solid physical copy of your prints. Check with the agency who is requesting your prints be taken and find out what their requirements are; we can provide you with a physical fingerprint card to return to the requesting agency should they request it.
